Aphemia after infarction of the left precentral gyrus and premotor area.

چکیده
The term “aphemia” is now used to describe a motor disorder that affects speech production but leaves the comprehension of spoken and written language intact. Aphemia is a specific form of mutism. Aphemia was formerly referred to as phonetic disintegration, pure anarthria, apraxic dysarthria, cortical dysarthria, verbal apraxia, subcortical motor aphasia, pure motor aphasia, small or mini Broca’s aphasia, pure word mutism and kinetic speech production disorder, reflecting the differing views on the nature of the underlying disorder (e.g., aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia). This condition may lie between pure speech disorders (i.e., dysarthrias) and language disorders (i.e., aphasias) and it usually reflects damage in the left frontal operculum1. Aphemia may emerge during recovery from more extensive deficits. Occasional cases of progressive aphemia resulting from selective left temporal lobe degeneration have been reported2. In addition, cases of epileptic aphemia have been described3.

Functional significance of the electrocorticographic auditory responses in the premotor cortex
Other than well-known motor activities in the precentral gyrus, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have found that the ventral part of the precentral gyrus is activated in response to linguistic auditory stimuli. It has been proposed that the premotor cortex in the precentral gyrus is responsible for the comprehension of speech, but the precise function of this area is still d...
متن کاملHomayoun as a Persian Music Scale on Non-Musician’s Brain: an fMRI Study
Introduction: The aim of this study was to get to a neurological evaluation of one of the Persian music scales, Homayoun, on brain activation of non-musician subjects. We selected this scale because Homayoun is one of the main scales in Persian classical music which is similar to minor mode in western scales. Methods: This study was performed on 19 right handed subjects, Aging 22-31. Here some ...
متن کاملNetwork Dynamics Mediating Ipsilateral Motor Cortex Activity during Unimanual Actions
Executing difficult actions with the left hand results in bilateral activity of motor areas along the precentral gyrus. Using TMS and fMRI, we explored the functional relationship between primary (M1) and premotor areas during unimanual actions, focusing on M1 activity in the ipsilateral hemisphere. Single-pulse TMS revealed that the amplitude of motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), elicited in the ...
متن کاملVirtual needle pain stimuli activates cortical representation of emotions in normal volunteers.
Psychological factors are known to play an extremely important role in the maintenance and development of chronic pain conditions. However, it is unclear how such factors relate to the central neural processing of nociceptive transmission in healthy individuals. To investigate this issue, the activation of the brain was studied in 30 healthy volunteers responding to virtual pain stimuli by fMRI...
متن کاملSexual Dimorphism in Volume of Precentral Cortex of Human Brain in Normal Subject who are Suffering from Alzheimer and Parkinson-A Stereological and Macroscopical Study
Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex difference in volume of precentral cortex of left hemisphere in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which are suffering from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 males, 34 females), 11 human brains suffering from Alzheimer (4 males, 7 females), ...
